Since September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, WOCA is joining forces with several communities statewide for its biggest awareness campaign to-date: Turn the Towns Teal. You’ll see teal ribbons around trees. Posters hanging in stores, gas stations, town halls and other buildings. Public service announcements on the jumbotron at Miller Park. In fact, here’s a preview

of everything “teal” that will be happening:
Tuesday, September 2: Our Turn Miller Park Teal event. WOCA is selling special ticket packages and throwing out the first pitch at the Brewers Game at 7:05PM against the Mets. Please join us in the loge outfield seats on the 3rd base side. It’ll be a great night of baseball for a good cause—bring friends or the whole family! Tickets are $25 and include a t-shirt. Call Sandi Wagner at
(414) 248-9631 to place your order.
Friday, September 5: Wear anything that’s the color teal to show your support for National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Day. It’s a simple way to build awareness and a good excuse to buy something new that’s teal! Also happening this day is our Tea for Teal event in Fort Atkinson—go to www.woca.net for more information.
Saturday, September 6: Lace up your walking or running shoes and join us at WOCA’s Third Annual Nancy’s Run Rock ‘N Stroll in conjunction with Tosa Fest in downtown Wauwatosa. The 5K run and 2-mile fun walk begins at 5:30PM, with a kid’s race at 4:00PM. Enjoy a beautiful route through the Menomonee River Parkway and all of the Tosa Fest activities. Cost is $17 ($20 on race day) for individuals or $50 ($60 on race day) for families up to 4. For more details, contact Valerie Nolin, Race Director, at
(414) 403-3254 or at valnolin@yahoo.com, or register at badgerlandstriders.org.

“I want all women to be
aware of ovarian cancer and
its symptoms,
and take it seriously like
has been involved with the WOCA Board for about five years. She joined because she wanted to help out friend and WOCA Secretary Sandi Wagner, but now feels like she’s the one reaping the benefits. “Back then it was a way for me to help and do something good with my spare time. But after meeting so many wonderful people and survivors, they’ve changed my outlook on life—I feel fortunate and inspired by their courage.”
As a Board Member, Marsha’s biggest goal for WOCA is awareness. “I’d like to see us grow bigger and bigger so we become a household name like Susan G. Komen.”
WOCA welcomes new Board Members, Katie Clark and Katie Fetzer, who are both ovarian cancer survivors. Look for their profile in a future issue. To learn more about ovarian cancer and WOCA’s mission, go to www.woca.net.
April 13, 2008 was the day that 91 attendees and 38 survivors celebrated the healing power of love and hope at WOCA’s Second Annual Survivor Scholarship Brunch. The event was again held at Boerner Botanical Gardens where three women won $1,000 scholarships to attend the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance conference in Washington D.C. Speakers Dr. Ellen Hartenbach and Dr. Joseph Connor, both gynecologic/oncologists from UW Hospital in Madison, shared important insights on ovarian cancer. Thanks to supporters like you, WOCA gave its first-ever $10,000 donation to Dr. Connor for research on a test to diagnose ovarian cancer.
A special thanks to Bartolotta’s for donating the venue, and for all other supporters and volunteers who made the brunch a success!

WOCA is so thankful for individuals who’ve truly stepped up to help us carry out our mission. We had an incredible response from these people in 2007 that held their own ovarian cancer fundraisers to build awareness and bring us closer to a cure:
Brimmer, both survivors, created a Tea for Teal event to raise awareness in Fort Atkinson.
Thanks to these folks and everyone else who helped support WOCA through monetary donations or volunteering time. We couldn’t do it without you!
